Characteristics of ankylosing spondylitis
- Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of rheumatic disease caused by auto-immune response.
- It affects primarily the spine and the connection of the spine to the pelvis (sacroiliac joints).
- It occurs more frequently in men, but recently more women are being diagnosed.
Clinical manifestations
- The initial symptoms are dull pain in the lower back or gluteal region which can spread to the spine and sacroiliac joints.
- Juvenile onset ankylosing spondylitis usually begins in the ankles or bottoms of heels.
- Pain and stiffness are worse in the morning and lessens with activity.
- In 20% of patients with ankylosing spondylitis, uveitis may occur.
Diagnosis
- Although there is currently no definitive tests, ankylosing spondylitis can be diagnosed based on blood immunologic tests and x-rays.
Treatment
- There is no cure for ankylosing spondylitis. Pain and other symptoms can be managed with conservative care: mdications (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, NSAIDs), posture training, physical therapy, and exercise.
- Correction of spine deformity may be needed.
