Characteristics of ankylosing spondylitis

  • Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of rheumatic disease caused by auto-immune response.
  • It affects primarily the spine and the connection of the spine to the pelvis (sacroiliac joints).
  • It occurs more frequently in men, but recently more women are being diagnosed.

Clinical manifestations

  • The initial symptoms are dull pain in the lower back or gluteal region which can spread to the spine and sacroiliac joints.
  • Juvenile onset ankylosing spondylitis usually begins in the ankles or bottoms of heels.
  • Pain and stiffness are worse in the morning and lessens with activity.
  • In 20% of patients with ankylosing spondylitis, uveitis may occur.

Treatment

  • There is no cure for ankylosing spondylitis. Pain and other symptoms can be managed with conservative care: mdications (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, NSAIDs), posture training, physical therapy, and exercise.
  • Correction of spine deformity may be needed.
