Automatic thoughts

  • A thought or an image that comes to mind automatically and immediately in response to an event.
  • An automatic thoughts are the result of one’s beliefs that has been accepted as true through repetitive social interactions.
  • Some people are more prone to interpret situations negatively (negative automatic thoughts). Negative automatic thoughts are developed based on irrational beliefs.

Change mind

  • If most of automatic thoughts are negative, it is better to practice substituting more reasonable thoughts in place of negative automatic thoughts.
  • Call this “changing thoughts”.
  • For changing thoughts, identify unreasonable beliefs underlying negative thoughts and change unreasonable beliefs into more realistic and reliable beliefs.

  • Does this though make me feel good?
  • Is this though reasonable?
  • Is this thought productive in this situation?
  • Does this thought help me be active?
  • Is this thought helpful in the current situation?
