Automatic thoughts
- A thought or an image that comes to mind automatically and immediately in response to an event.
- An automatic thoughts are the result of one’s beliefs that has been accepted as true through repetitive social interactions.
- Some people are more prone to interpret situations negatively (negative automatic thoughts). Negative automatic thoughts are developed based on irrational beliefs.
Types of unreasonable beliefs
Change mind
- If most of automatic thoughts are negative, it is better to practice substituting more reasonable thoughts in place of negative automatic thoughts.
- Call this “changing thoughts”.
- For changing thoughts, identify unreasonable beliefs underlying negative thoughts and change unreasonable beliefs into more realistic and reliable beliefs.

- Is this thought productive in this situation?
- Does this thought help me be active?
- Is this thought helpful in the current situation?
